Hair Transplant beyond aesthetics

At MediCapilar, we use the FUE technique (Follicular Unit Extraction) as main advantage to rehabilitate the hair health of those who seek us. It’s a procedure carried out by a team of experienced health professionals, that offers excellent results and creates a natural look and a permanent effect.

This technique is currently the most used worldwide when it comes to hair transplants.

What is the FUE Technique (Follicular Unit Extraction)?

It’s a minimally invasive surgical procedure during which individual hair follicles are removed, without having to remove a strip of scalp.

It’s a technique which function is to transplant follicular units from a donor area to a recipient area. In other words, follicular units are extracted from a healthy hair area and transplanted into another area affected by alopecia or baldness.

The FUE technique can treat hair problems both in men and women, and is also meant for patients of all ages, as long as they meet the necessary requirements to do the treatment.

Advantages of the FUE Technique

It’s, indeed, a very popular and effective hair transplant method, requested both by men and women, with obvious advantages in comparison with other hair transplant techniques. The main ones are:

  • It’s minimally invasive and leaves minimal/millimetric scars

Since the follicles are extracted one by one, the scars are minuscule and sometimes imperceptible. The technique being minimally invasive, the recovery is very quick, which allows the patients to go back to their daily lives soon, while taking some medical precautions.

  • Use of local anaesthesia

The use of a local anaesthesia for the FUE Technique facilitates the recovery process, so the patient can go home on the same day.

  • Extraction of exact units of hair.

The professional that executes the FUE Technique can extract the exact number of hair units according to the clients’ wishes, for the clients to know at all times what results they will get.

What is the FUE Technique? What is the process?

As we already mentioned, the FUE is a minimally invasive technique that allows the patient to have a short recovery time. To execute this procedure, the area that is going to be treated is anaesthetized to ensure that the patient feels no pain. The implanted follicles will grow normally, and the results will be completely natural.

But, in terms of the procedure, how is it carried out?

The six phases of the FUE Technique

Identificação das zonas dadoras

Conception and preparation

The first step is to draw the area that needs to be treated according to the patient’s wishes. After that, we delimit the area that will be used for the extraction of the follicles and we shave that area, for the follicular units to be easier to detect and remove.

Aplicação de anestesia local na área dadora

Medication and anaesthesia

After the appointment and the delimitation of the areas that will be used in the process, the doctor applies a local anaesthesia in the patient’s scalp. On top of that, we will always resort to additional medication to ensure all the necessary comfort and safety during the procedure.

Extração de unidades foliculares

Selection, extraction

Once the anaesthesia is applied in the donor area, we carry out the extraction of the healthy follicular units, one by one, until we obtain the necessary number of follicles to cover the area that needs to be treated.

Colheita e preservação

Preservation of follicles

Once this part is done, we can move on to their preservation.

Pequena incisão ao redor dos folículos saudáveis

Make incisions

Incisions are then made in the recipient area to facilitate the placement of the healthy follicles. It’s a process that is executed in all the identified points.

Implantação das unidades foliculares saudáveis nas zonas recetoras

Placement of the follicles

Once the incisions are done, the follicles must be implanted with the purpose of achieving a result that is as dense and natural as possible, following the plan that was agreed upon between the patient and the professional.

Frequently asked questions about the FUE Technique

Why should I do a Hair Transplant using the FUE Technique?

The FUE hair transplant method is the best option to eradicate baldness or alopecia problems, due to the advantages it offers to the patients. In addition, it guarantees natural and permanent effects, this technique being the most tested technique worldwide.

Does this technique cause pain?

Painless. The technique is painless because it’s done under local anaesthesia. The procedure is, therefore, painless and comfortable, so the patient can go home completely at ease after the surgery.

What is the effectiveness of the FUE Technique?

It’s a highly effective technique, for, in good hands, it allows an optimum utilisation and a strategic placement of the transplanted follicular units.

As a result, it produces hair transplants with great results, including in the area where the follicles where extracted.

The “post-surgical” pain can be managed with painkillers prescribed by the team, during the 2 or 3 first days.

How long does the procedure take?

You will get your hair back in just one day. Depending on the area that needs to be treated, the procedure lasts on average 7 hours and the patient goes home that same day, since there is no need for hospitalisation.

Is the technique suitable for men and women?

For both. This technique is perfectly suitable both for men and women. It’s a very versatile procedure, perfect for different areas of the scalp.

Usually, the ideal candidates for the procedure are those who lost hair in specific areas.

What are the most visible results of this technique?

The new hair grows continually as if it had always been in that area. And, of course, the natural result. Thanks to the procedure and to the fact that the hair belongs to the patient, the final look is more natural, with no visible scars and with a guaranteed durability.

What precautions should be taken after the procedure?

After the procedure, just take the medication prescribed by the doctor, keeping in mind the advised precautions and, in the case of MediCapilar, there will be follow-ups until 18 months after the hair transplant through regular medical appointments.

What’s the difference between the FUE and FUT techniques?

With the FUE, the follicles are extracted through micro incisions in the scalp; with the FUT, the surgeon removes a strip of scalp skin that will be used to collect follicles for the area that requires treatment. The main advantage of the FUE over the FUT, is that, with the former, the scars are practically imperceptible, since they are under 1 mm, whereas the second technique leaves a big linear scar in the back region of the head.

How much does the FUE Technique cost?

A global estimate is made depending on the type of intervention, the needs or even the wishes of the patient. At MediCapilar we adjust and adapt financial solutions so as to meet the needs of our patients.
